Excel Date Changes

We have several documents that are timestamp sensitive.  My team has reported seemingly random occasions of timestamps altering on excel documents when opened, viewed only and closed.  I think I have found the correlation.

Newer Excel files with "xlsx" or "xlsm" extensions are opened in Excel and a temporary file is created with the "~$" at the beginning of the filename.  This file has a current timestamp.  The original Excel File timestamp is not altered.  If the document is saved, the permanent copy of the file updates its timestamp.  If the document is closed without saving, the temporary file is removed and the original timestamp remains as it was prior to opening the file.

Excel files that are saved in older "xls" format do not open a temporary file.  The timestamp is immediately changed when a file is opened.  Excel holds the original timestamp in memory and will change the timestamp back if the document is closed without saving.  This works fine when the file is not in a location under the "Sync" shared folders.  When the file is in a Shared Folder, it appears that Sync sees the change and syncs the file to the cloud database.  Now I have a file that was unchanged with a new timestamp.  This is causing severe issues with our department that works with pharma documents.

We are going through the documents that we can and converting to newer Excel formats to help curtail this issue now that  we have some idea what causes it.  I hope this information helps others that are having these "random" timestamp issues.

Is this something that Share File can address?
