Files/folders beginning with the '.' dot character

Hello All,
We use ShareFile within our company which uses development tools which create files and directories starting with the '.' dot character.

I have asked Citrix Sharefile support (SFSUPPORT-150918) and when files are synced to the cloud these files are so called normalised.

This is an issue for those who want to do a simple cloud backup/restore operation. Once restored the development environment that these files/folders where created under will not work.

Support say there is no way to change this but have said that if i want to sync files in a different fashion i need to put a comment here.

Can anyone help?

Currently, ShareFile platform normalizes file names starting with "." and certain other characters.

We are sorry to hear that this doesn't work well with your use-case.

Just so I understand the issue correctly,
Is the issue that ShareFile Sync changes the file/folder names by removing "."?
Would it help your use-case if ShareFile Sync could exclude files and folders beginning with "." from syncing to remote and leave them unchanged while syncing all the other files?

Hello Rakesh,

Thank you for your response.

Our company has used various cloud based storage systems in the past but has settled on using ShareFile. This decision has been out of my control but as such has caused me this issue.

In my case I use sharefile sync to sync all my work to an off site location such that i have real time backup for situations where i can either a) recover from quickly if my PC fails and b) such that i can work from other locations where sharefile sync is also used.

Because sharefile sync modifies files this will cause issues when/if wanting to perform the steps above.

All i/we need is for syncfile to sync files/folders to the cloud 'as they are' without modification. None of these files are system files (aka Windows system) which we/I do not need to backup but files created by development tools in project directories.

If i/we can have a method which (by default) handles files/folders the way they do at present but with an option change (per user) handles files differently then that would be significantly better for me and others in our organisation.

Regards

Unfortunately, Currently ShareFile platform doesn't allow uploading of files beginning with "." as is. It normalizes them for security reasons. So ShareFile Sync will not be able to sync files/folders beginning with "." to cloud.

could you provide us details of the tool which is generating files beginning with "." which you would want to be synced across all devices?

Hello Rakesh,

Development environments that I have use of include MS Vistual Studio and Sierra Wireless IDE's.

Can you please advise why you think it is necessary to control files in this manor. i.e. why are they a risk?
