Migrate all files including My Documents etc. to ShareFile?

Dear Community,

As we are planning the final phases of the migration, I have a general question about the amount of data you have migrated to ShareFile in an Enterprise environment:

Has anyone of you migrated "everything" to ShareFile. Here I am talking about everything within i.e. My Documents (currently pointing to a network share) and then redirected the My Documents folder to ShareFile directory? We have on-premise StorageZones

If so, did that work out fine for you? If not, why not?

The reason for us to do so, is to operate within ONE document repository for the end-user and making all files available on all devices via. ShareFile. Otherwise the user has to work with two document repositories and some files available on all devices and some not. Especially for users "on the road" this would be a benefit.

Looking forward to your replies

Thanks - Allan

Hi Allan,

The way on-premise StorageZones work, the designated folder for the local storage is encrypted, so you would need to be accessing the files through the ShareFile interface, whether it is Desktop App or Sync or whatnot.  So I would be surprised if people were able to link directly to the folder through file explorer.

Hi Leo,

Thank you for your answer.

When talking about the redirection I meant pointing "My Documents" to the local ShareFile directory created by the Sync application instead of the old classic network share.

Not directly to the StorageZones, sorry for the confusion.

I.e. /Users/username/Documents/ points to /Users/username/ShareFile/Personal Folders/

So, when the users save a document to the default My Documents folder, they actually save it to Personal Folders within ShareFile and hence getting it synced to ShareFile.

Hope it makes sense?

Best regards - Allan

The essence of my question is merely:

Have you seen any use case where all documents/files has been moved to ShareFile and then using  solely ShareFile as the document/file repository going forward? Or is the norm that users maintain two repositories? (My Documents and ShareFile).

The link from My Documents to ShareFile folder is basically just making it more user friendly in the case of using ShareFile only.

Hi Allan,

I know you can do that with symbolic links.  However, I can't provide testimonial on how effective it is as our Support teams focus on break/fix rather than implementation.  The only advice I can give is to not do it across a network -- don't do a link to a ShareFile Sync folder on a different computer.

I would like this too. It would be nice for ShareFile to allow you to choose your documents, downloads, desktop and have it sync to ShareFile personal folders.
